Our lives are filled with two kinds of chores. There are those that have to be done only once, and some, like haircuts have to be done over and over again.
Similarly, in our spiritual lives we make the commitment to follow God once. But daily, even hourly, we have to make spiritual decisions.
What is the relationship between the two kinds of tasks? How does the once, affect the always? The former tend to be more significant activities. By their very nature they are more permanent, lasting. Because daily chores are more commonplace, more familiar, we tend to ponder these simple tasks less, despite doing them more.
If our lives are in proper balance the decisive activities will determine the day-to-day. We will build our lives around the major decisions and jobs, and our routines will reflect that emphasis. Those daily activities will never be accomplished fully, or to perfection. Yet we must continue on because they are a expression of what is important to us.
